How does the EMS work? The EMS unit has a series of wire connections with two or four bonded electrodes attached to the end of each channel. The unit contracts and relaxes rhythmically through your instructions through the unit, thereby transmitting soft electrical pulses. It also relieves pain by sending tiny electrical pulses to the nerve fibers below through electrodes placed near the pain area or pressure point. How does TENS work? The TENS theory suggests that there are two mechanisms for pain relief. When TENS provides a steady, mild current, some people experience relief. Electricity from the electrodes stimulates nerves in the affected area and may prevent pain signals from traveling to the brain. If the pain signal is not transmitted to the brain, the pain will not be felt. This theory is often referred to as the "gate control" theory. Another theory is that electrical stimulation of nerves may contribute to the body's own natural pain control mechanisms. Low-frequency currents may cause the body to release pain-killing substances called "endorphins." Regardless of the pain theory used, TENS has proven to be useful in the field of pain management.
